The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Bangalore-based NGO Sustain Plus have joined hands to start a large-scale circular dairy program, aiming to install 10,000 biogas plants across 15 states of India, including Gujarat, Madya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar!

Ganesh Neelam, Director of Sustain Plus, said in a statement, “We have signed MoUs with over 26 milk unions across 15 states in India, with dairy cooperative network acting as a powerful platform for scale, this model can be replicated across states, making India’s dairy sector not just the world’s largest, but also among the most sustainable.”

What is Sustain Plus?

Sustain Plus is a joint initiative established by Social Alpha, Clnl, and the SELCO Foundation, focused on driving sustainable innovations to enhance rural livelihoods in India.

The director of Sustain Plus also stated that the partnership with NDDB aims to empower dairy farmers, especially women, by providing clean cooking fuel and nutrient-rich bio-slurry to improve soil fertility.

The Establishment Between NDDB and NGO

The circular dairy program, recently launched in the presence of Co-operation Minister Amit Shah, aims to establish climate-smart dairy villages and promote scalable, sustainable farming practices across India.

The installation of 10,000 biogas plants is expected to produce around 3 lakh tonnes of organic slurry, improving soil health while producing high-purity biomethane with the help of a biogas upgradation system.

Also, these plants will produce more than 7 million cubic meters of biogas every year. Furthermore, this program will be able to produce around 60,000 tonnes of Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM) every year, replacing the same amount of chemical phosphate fertilizers, promoting cost-effective and eco-friendly farming practices.

In the end, the director highlighted that by incorporating biogas plants, solar-powered dairy operations, and efficient milk collection systems, this joint venture between NDDB and Sustain Plus aims to lower input costs, enhance soil health for dairy farmers, offer clean cooking fuel to rural households and biomethane through biogas upgrading for industrial use.

Conclusion

In the end, this collaboration between NDDB and Sustain Plus NGO marks a groundbreaking initiative in India’s dairy sector, paving the way for sustainable and climate-smart farming practices. With the installation of 10,000 biogas plants, this circular dairy program will not only improve soil health and reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers but also empower rural dairy farmers.

By leveraging biogas production technology to produce high-purity biomethane and adopting solar-powered dairy operations, this initiative will significantly lower input costs and contribute to India’s goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable agriculture.
