In November 2022, The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced the extension of the National Bio Energy Programme for another 3 years till 2025-26. A whopping Rs. 858 crore budget has been allocated for the first phase. The programme is believed to play an instrumental role in India’s energy recovery efforts as it will boost the use of surplus biomass, both urban & industrial biowaste, and cattle dung.

This programme is aimed at supporting the setting up of large biogas, BioCNG, and power plants. It doesn’t include municipal solid waste to power projects.
Biomass programme will provide the necessary support to set up pellets, and briquettes to be used in power generation and non-bagasse-based power generation projects. Besides, extending the required support to set up family and medium-sized biogas plants in rural areas is also part of the programme.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy’s (MNRE’s) efforts to promote bioenergy date back to the 80s. Their efforts include increased utilization of huge surplus biomass, cattle dung, and urban biowaste for energy recovery.
Central financial assistance to set up bioenergy projects with increased project viability is quite commendable. Bioenergy projects supported by the MNRE are biogas, BioCNG, and power from industrial & agricultural as well as urban waste. By making the most of this vital assistance from MNRE, entrepreneurs can save their capital costs and also interest on loans.
Companies offering biogas to CNG plants and biogas upgrading plants find the efforts of MNRE quite encouraging. And no wonder, Mr. Gaurav Kedia, Chairman, of the Indian Biogas Association also appreciated and called the Waste to Energy Programme a welcome step.
While speaking to the PTI, Mr. Kedia said that the scheme is well-thought-out and it will help nurture an investor-friendly ecosystem based on a circular economy where biogas will have a pivotal role to play. It will positively impact job opportunities, organic cropping, the environment, and energy independence as crude oil imports will also reduce.
A 20 percent higher standard central financial assistance for the northeastern region and Gaushalas (cattle-shelters) is certainly a much-needed and welcomed extra push as it would promote further development for these under-funded & under-developed areas.
